The special CBI court finally framed charges against 17 accused including former telecom minister A Raja and DMK MP Kanimozhi pertaining to their alleged roles in the 2G Spectrum scam today.
The court allowed Central Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) fresh appeal to summon charge of criminal breach of trust against Raja and Kanimozhi. Alongside this, former private secretary R K Chandolia and former telecom secretary Siddhartha Behura were charged under Section 409, they will now have to face a minimum punishment of seven years and a maximum punishment of life imprisonment.
The telecom operators who were involved in the case, Reliance Telecom Ltd, Swan Telecom and Unitech Wireless, were charged for criminal conspiracy and abetment in the case. The court also framed charges and found prima facie evidence against Reliance ADAG’s top officials, Gautam Doshi, Surender Pipara and Hari Nair for offences of cheating and abetement.
A Raja could not ask for a breather, in terms of charges, as he along with other public servants have been charged with misuse of official position punishable under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Earlier, A. Raja had to resign from the Union Cabinet last year as Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) found him guilty for fixing low spectrum to favor companies who were largely ineligible for the 2G spectrum.
