HD is the next big revolution in the television broadcasting domain

HD is the next big revolution in the television broadcasting domain, opines Mr. Sahaab Khan, Vice President - Technology, Media Guru Consultants.

HD has taken off in the global markets with countries such as US and Japan that have already made the shift from SD to HD. Even in India HD broadcast has begun with the channels such as Sakshi News and Discovery HD along with the latest season of IPL being shot in HD. But the actual kick-off for HD in India will be by the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2010.

Migration to HD from SD is not a big issue as the technological solutions are easily available, the formats have been locked and HD is supported by all the platforms of broadcasting. Still, there are a few major challenges that require attention of the broadcasters in India to migrate from SD to HD, including the need to acquire sound technical know-how and making approximately 40% investment to upgrade the infrastructure. The most crucial of the all is the change in the production techniques where the broadcaster requires making more detailed preparation of the sets, costumes, make-up, talent, etc.

The broadcasters need to start with the planning stages to roll out HD workflow in their respective organisations soon. "The revolution is not an apple that will fall when it is ripe, but you have to make it fall,” he sums.
