Indian security establishment is going to hold meeting with RIM officials today on Thursday to reach a feasible solution over the security concerns. As the deadline of 31st August for the company is approaching fast, the worries and anxiety levels are on high.
The new rounds of talks are going to start today between government and Blackberry officials. The fate of Blackberry in world's fastest growing telecom market will be decided in these meetings. RIM has been asked to provide access to encrypted codes to the security establishment of India by August 31st in any case or else the company has to leave the Indian telecom space.
"Deliberations will go on for the next two days and a final decision will be taken on Monday," a senior Interior ministry official told Reuters. A RIM source confirmed the meeting.
The main hassle is due to Blackberry's corporate/entrepreneur e-mails which possess highly encrypted codes. These can be dangerous from the point of view of national security. Otherwise Blackberry has agreed to provide manual access to its services. The government is also asking for an automated access by November.
A shutdown would affect about 1 million users in India out of a total 41 million BlackBerry users worldwide, allowing them to use the devices only for calls and Internet browsing. |
