Global IT firm, International Business Machines (IBM) has partnered with the National Institute of Design of India (NID) and Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, University of Tokyo (RCAST) in order to work upon a collaborative research initiative.
In announcement jointly made, the three organisations will be exploring an open, common user interface platform for mobile devices. This eventually will enable the mobile devices easier for use by elderly, and illiterate or semi-illiterate people in the developing countries.
"This collaborative research program will result in critical insights to the accessibility requirements of the elderly and people with little or no education in developing nations. With mobile phones becoming ubiquitous, these technologies will make key information sources accessible and relevant to a vast population," said Manish Gupta, Director, IBM Research - India and Chief Technologist, IBM India/SA in a press statement.
The initiative is part of IBM's Open Collaborative Research (OCR) program which seeks to move on the path of innovation by means of industry-university research collaboration. IBM plans to make the technology available as an open platform once it is developed. This eventually could be utilised by various organisations, such as government and businesses, to make use of it around the globe and take the advantage.
Mobile as a platform has gained immense popularity and is being seen as a necessary device in today's scenario. This initiative will be of immense help towards the populace in the developing countries who still face difficulty in using mobile devices. |
