Microsoft Corporation uncovered its next version of the popular IPTV and multimedia software platform “Mediaroom 2.0” at the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) being held at Las Vegas.
Considered to be the world’s most deployed Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) platform, the new version Mediaroom 2.0 will let service providers deliver TV services to a broad range of devices that includes set-top boxes, Windows 7 PCs, Macs, Xbox 360 game consoles and, in the future, mobile phones.
Scheduled to be available for operators to initiate with testing beginning next month, the Mediaroom 2.0 unites the software and cloud services to power new TV experiences. The IPTV software platform can be deployed by operators as their entertainment cloud powering the delivery of a complete television service, including cloud digital video recording (DVR), on-demand features, interactive applications, and access to both operator-hosted content as well as externally hosted content such as Internet TV, which was earlier not possible.
The version 2.0 of Mediaroom will let service providers deliver video-on-demand over IP networks of varying bandwidths by integrating Microsoft's Internet Information Services Smooth Streaming and Silverlight technology. Mediaroom 2.0 previously delivered over IP networks with managed quality of service.
As for the delivery of content over the Windows 7 PC, Microsoft says that it has eliminated the need deploy any sort of additional hardware such as tuner. The Mediaroom version 2.0 supports the Windows Media Center in Windows 7 enabling operators to deliver their premium TV services, including live HD TV, DVR and on-demand programming on Windows 7-based PCs.
“Our strategy with Mediaroom is to combine the power of client software and cloud-based services to greatly enhance the way consumers experience digital entertainment. We want to make it easier for consumers to find and discover great content, to watch, listen and engage in new ways, and to do so anywhere and on any screen,” said Enrique Rodriguez, corporate vice president for the TV, Video and Music Business at Microsoft.
“Mediaroom 2.0 is a key milestone in our strategy, providing the software platform to power operators’ service clouds to reach more screens, and more people, with more content than ever before,” adds Rodriguez. |
