Personal computers are one of the most evolved devices globally. We have seen the shift from desktops to laptops, laptops created change towards notebooks, notebooks followed by netbooks and now we have the new “smartbooks”.

Lenovo Group Ltd, the fourth largest manufacturer of PCs in the world uncovered its first smartbook, ‘Skylight’.

The Lenovo Skylight, which debuts at the 2010 International Consumer Electronic Show (CES), being held in Las Vegas from 7-10 January, is the first smartbook that has officially hit the computing world as of now. It features an eye-catching sleek and slim outlook. The Skylight offers all day battery life, robust built wireless (3G and Wi-Fi) connectivity and custom interface with live web gadgets.

Smartbooks are the new-age personal computing devices that blend the innovation and the ease of usage at anytime, anywhere. They are smaller than the netbooks, run on custom OSes and deploy miniature smartphone processors. ‘The smartbooks are supposed to offer the best of smartphone convenience with the form factor of a Netbook,’ describes the CNET.

“Skylight is designed to transform the mobile Internet experience,” says Lenovo in the press statement. Skylight has a 10.1-inch screen and breaks free from the Wintel composition. Skylight has a Linux-based custom OS with "web gadgets" for accessing functions such as Gmail and Facebook. While, instead of deploying Intelx86 processor, Lenovo has incorporated Qualcomm Inc.’s Snapdragon ARM chipset architecture in Skylight. Weighing less than 2 pounds, Skylight is slightly bigger than an iPhone and smaller than a standard netbook. The Skylight boasts more than 10 hours of active battery life.

Peter Gaucher, executive director, Mobile Internet Product Management, Lenovo says, “Skylight combines the long battery life and connectivity of a smartphone with the full web browsing and multimedia experience of a netbook to create one of the first devices in this developing smartbook category. Consumers want choices. They can now choose from a full portfolio of Lenovo mobile consumer devices including netbooks, smartbooks and laptops.”

The Lenovo Skylight is expected to ship in the US market by April this year with a price tag of around $499.
