Telecom stocks rise on announcement of NTP 2011

Telecom stocks led by Bharti Airtel surged by up to 5% on the BSE today after the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology announced its National Telecom Policy(NTP) for 2011.

The policy aims to capacitate its users to avail free roaming services across the country and nationwide mobile number portability.

Shares of the country's largest private telecom company Bharti Airtel alone surged by 4.66% to a high of Rs 380.20 on the BSE today.

Similarly stocks of Idea Cellular and Reliance Communications rose by 4.32% and 3.44% repectively, which attracted buyers' interest.

MTNL too, surged by 3.53% and Tata Communications' stock went up by 1.87%.

To some analysts, NTP 2011 does not indicate any prospective negative for incumbents whereas some others point out that it lacks in proving policy measures which will impact industry as well as each incumbent. No timeline for Spectrum Act is provided and TRAI may take a much longer time than estimated, to make pan India licence regime. Thus, the abolishment of roaming charges is receiving mixed response while analyzing its impact in near future.

Analysts also realise that the provisions for recognition of telecom as an infrastructure sector in the draft bill can act as a prospective boost for the industry.
