CBI to soon file FIR against Maran in relation to Aircel deal

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is all set to file a FIR and register a regular case against former Union minister Dayanidhi Maran and his elder brother Kalanithi   Maran for their alleged role in the Aircel- Maxcis Communications deal.

CBI has completed its preliminary enquiry (PE), which looked into deviations in the telecom policy, 2001-07, and subsequently filed a report before the Supreme Court on the status of its investigation.

The PE supervises the tenures of the late Pramod Mahajan, Arun Shourie, both of whom were telecom ministers in the Vajpayee government, and Dayanidhi Maran, who headed the Sanchar Bhawan between May 2004 and May 2007.

Maran has been alleged of pressurizing the promoter of cellular server provider Malayasian Company Maxis, owned by T. Ananda Krishnan in 2006. The Center for Public Interest Litigation( CPIL), an NGO and a petitioner in the 2G case, had alleged that Aircel received the licenses in December 2006 after it was taken over by the Maxis Group.

CBI counsel KK Venugopal informed a bench of Justices GS Singhvi and AK Ganguly that the investigating officers probing Dayanidhi Maran's tenure as the telecom minister had wound up their probe and could be in a position to register in the next few days.

Furthermore, Venugopal told the court that it will inform the court on the final verdict on the action taken on the Loop- Telecom-Essar in weeks to come as the investigation process is still on.

Maran and Essar Group are under investigation for allegedly creating a front company, Loop Telecom, aiming to "illegally" securing the license for 2G spectrum. Maran has been repeatedly denying all the allegations whereas Essar Group claims that it has already got a clean chit from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs vis-a –vis Loop Telecom controversy.
