To actualize its expansion plans in Indian Telecom space, Middle East's prominent Emirates Telecommunication Corporation (Etisalat) seems more interested in Idea Cellular than Reliance Communications.

The company's international chief Jamal al-Jarwan speaking to the media people revealed firm's priorities regarding expansion strategies. Etisalat is the second largesy telecom player in Middle East in terms of market value.

Nearly two months ago, speculations were hovering about Etisalat's interest in at least 26% stake in Anil Ambani led RCOM. But now putting full stop to all the rumors, Jamal has indicated towards Idea Cellular as its preference over RCOM for expansion of its services in world’s fastest growing Indian Telecommunication market.

"I don't see any deal in the near future," Jarwan said. "Definitely not this year. We are taking our time." Etisalat has been expanding aggressively overseas after losing its monopoly in its home market. It is present in 18 markets globally in Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

An investment in India would allow Etisalat to fulfill Chairman Mohammed Omran's goal of being an active player in a market that is forecast to approach 1 billion users by 2014.
