RIM-Indian officials Thursday talk in vain; no solution yet

The Thursday round of talks between RIM and Indian Security establishment officials ended with no conclusion. The discussions failed to reach any decisive point regarding India's worries about the security through encrypted mails of Blackberry.

Officials of RIM and a joint group of officials from National Technical Research Organisation, Intelligence Bureau and Research and Analysis Wing discussed the issue on Thursday.

After the failure of talks, the government clearly insisted Blackberry on providing solution to its worries by 31st August, or packs its bag from India. Government wants technical solution for the interpretation and vigilance of Blackberry services in readable format.

Minister of State for communication and information technology Sachin Pilot said "In case no solution is provided, those services which cannot be intercepted and monitored in readable format may be banned by the government". The minister said this in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha yesterday.

Amid talks, the shares of Blackberry dipped by 1.9% on the NASDAQ and closed at $46.84.

However, the company also issued a statement which said, "The use of strong encryption in wireless technology is not unique to the BlackBerry platform. It is unquestionably an industry wide matter."

The statement added that RIM "is extending an offer to the government of India whereby RIM would lead an industry forum focused on supporting the lawful access needs of law enforcement agencies while preserving the legitimate information security needs of corporations and other organisations in India."

"In particular, the industry forum would work closely with the Indian government and focus on developing recommendations for policies and processes aimed at preventing the misuse of strong encryption technologies while preserving its many societal benefits in India."
