The deadline for the implementation of the mobile number portability (MNP) service is likely to be shifted as the preparations are still under progress. This has been notified by the Union Minister of State for Communications & Information Technology, Gurudas Kamat.
He informed that the set dead line for the implementation of MNP is 31st of March 2010. But all the networks don’t seem to be ready for the implementation by the due date. The government will issue another time line after evaluating the status of all the stakeholders. This will be done to avoid any network problem in call processing/completion after the launch of Mobile Number Portability.
Various activities are required to be carried out by the operators including technical augmentation and upgradation of their existing networks, carrying out required installation verification tests, establishing links with MNP Operators and conducting inter operator test. After the service providers are ready with their own inter-operator test results, a complete Acceptance Test (A/T) is to be carried out by Department of Telecommunications (DOT) across the networks of all the concerned service providers in all the service areas before MNP Service is implemented.
Implementation of MNP is another service that is being postponed by the government over and over again, besides 3G. MNP is the service that would allow the users to change their operators retaining their old numbers.
