13.7mn added to GSM user base in January: COAI

13.7mn added to GSM user base in January: COAI

The subscriber base of the GSM wireless telecom operators saw addition of 13.7 million users in the month January 2010.

According to the data released by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), the industry body representing the GSM operators in India, the overall subscriber base using GSM services reached 394.2 million by January 2010.

As per the data furnished by COAI, India's leading GSM mobile by subscriber base, Bharti Airtel added 2.85 million new mobile subscribers in January. The total subscribers of Airtel’s services reached to121.7 million.

Subscriber base of Vodafone Essar, the second leading GSM operator in the country, witnessed increase of 2.74 million during January, 2010. The total user base stood at total to 94.1 million; reveals the COAI data.

Idea Cellular and Spice Communications combined user base rose by 2.27 million new users, taking it to a total 59.88 million. The operator has retained its position as the third largest GSM operator in India.

2.2 million new users added to the base of the state-run telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) during January 2010 with the total subscriber base reaching to 59.45 million.

Also, Aircel stood at 33 million users with addition 2 million new users during the period. The other state-owned operators MTNL’s (Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited) user base saw increase of just 45,067 new subscribers. MTNL had total number 4.6 million users by the end of the period.

The data does not include numbers from Tata DoCoMo and Reliance Communications’ GSM service as the both the operators release their subscriber figures separately.
