According to the latest data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, the density of telephones in the country reached the one-third-of-the-population mark in as of the end of December, 2008.

Indian states with higher mobile phone penetration will experience higher annual growth rates in the future. A report by the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) headed by Prof Rajat Kathuria suggests that states with 10 percent higher mobile phone penetration will have an annual average growth rate 1.2 percent higher than those with lower mobile phone density.
