The Indian Telephone Industries (ITI) has decided to bid for one million Aakash 2 tablets for supplying from April this year.
The announcement comes after the HRD ministry’s recent decision to involve public sector enterprises for the bidding process. The ministry currently requires 220 million Aakash tablets, to keep its promise of providing a tablet to every college and university students by 2014.
The HRD ministry had earlier found many functional problems with the tablets manufactured by Datawind. The ministry was also not pleased with the UK based company’s move of selling the tablets in the market before supplying it to the government.
But what really made the ministry to involve public sector enterprises was Datawind’s announcement that it would not be able to supply the Aakash 2 tablet without increasing its costs.
