Twitter has announced that it will begin restricting Tweets in specific countries. Until now the micro blogging site removed tweets only if any country’s government requested it to do so.
In a blog post on Thursday the company announced that it now has the ability to selectively block a Tweet from appearing to users in one country while it appears in other countries.
The company mentioned "pro-Nazi content" as examples of restrictions it would cooperate with in countries where it is banned like Germany and France.
Twitter also said that even with the possibility of such restrictions the company would not be able to coexist with some countries as various countries have different ideas about the contours of freedom of expression.
The move highlights the frequent tensions over freedom of speech and privacy issues between foreign governments and Internet companies like Google and Facebook. Earlier this month Google and Facebook were among 21 companies that were taken to court in India over allegations of posting offensive material that were seen as a threat to communal harmony.
