Buzz: Google's new social media offering

 Print    Email

The internet giant has rolled out “Buzz” which is the latest venture by Google Inc in the social media dimension.

Announcing the launch of “Buzz” Todd Jackson, Product Manager, Gmail and Google Buzz, he writes on the official Google Blog, “With more and more communication happening online, the social web has exploded as the primary way to share interesting stuff, tell the world what you're up to in real-time and stay more connected to more people.”

Observing the popularising trend social media, Google has introduced “Buzz” as a feature incorporated in its popular mailing service, Gmail that lets the users connect in real-time with updates, photos, videos as well as links. Gmail users can follow people with whom they chat often or connect with email. Furthermore, the “Buzz” would be available on the mobile platform as well to provide connectivity on the go.

Earlier, the internet firm has taken several steps to add social features to its products. Its products such as Orkut, OpenSocial and Friend Connect have not gone down well with the users.

This is a big challenge for “Buzz” as, today; Facebook dominates the social media network followed by the microblogging website Twitter. These website are currently having a huge following, Facebook has over 400 million registered users. To garner that much users in the social media domain “Buzz” needs to have a USP that makes it different.

“If you think about it, there's always been a big social network underlying Gmail” writes Jackson hoping for a positive feedback for “Buzz”.
