The Associated Press (AP) has renewed its licensing agreement with the internet website Yahoo! setting off a new debate. Through this agreement, Yahoo! would be licences to aggregate stories, photos and videos and subsequently publish them on various websites of Yahoo!
Either party has not revealed the financial details pertaining to the deal. Though, according to a few reports published, the deal is expected to have been set on a higher price with more strict restrictions being imposed over the content.
In a statement released on the AP corporate website, Paul Colford, Director of Media Relations for The Associated Press has remarked, “Yahoo! has been an excellent partner for 12 years and has always recognized the value and importance of original, authoritative news. We are pleased Yahoo! and AP will continue that valued relationship. AP looks forward to deepening its partnership with Yahoo! as we and our members explore new opportunities and new ways to engage with audiences.”
Yahoo! has been providing AP content since 1998. As a provider of news it also makes use of content from Reuters and various other publications. Among the Indian content providers on Yahoo!, news from ANI, Hindustan Times, Financial Express, Indian Express can be found on its websites. Moreover, the internet firm also employs its own team of reporters for news.
News aggregation on the online medium has been opposed by the print publications in the recent past due to the availability of the content for free. Besides, this is quite contrary to the talks of AP ongoing with the other internet giants Microsoft and Google, which are yet to be concluded. |
