Yahoo! Mail gradually losing ground to Gmail in India

Gmail has turned out to be more popular among the Indian web users against the Yahoo!’s mail service. According to the latest data by ViziSense Yahoo! Mail has lost its top spot in the Indian sub-continent against Google’s free e-mail service which now has over 18 million registered users from the region by the end of September 2009.
ViziSense is an online audience measurement and analytics provider platform that undertakes the task to follow the usage of India’s leading websites on a monthly basis.
The data reveals Yahoo! Mail currently accounts for around 16.8 million unique users by September end. This marks an 8% decline in traffic since August this year. Users of Yahoo!’s mail service in August 2009 stood at 18.2 million.
While, Gmail, Google’s mailing service has witnessed a rise from 17.7 million users in August to 18.2 million by end of September with a 3% increase in traffic.
As for other e-mail service providers Rediff Mail had 6.25 million users and Microsoft's Windows Live Mail had around 6% rise in traffic with 4.11 million.
Yahoo! has been continuously enhancing its services in the recent past. The company has created a multimedia homepage as well upgraded the mailing service with addition of various applications. Besides, the company has also kicked off its “Y!OU” campaign with the front page ads in the national dailies and TV ads. It would be interesting to follow will Yahoo! be able to win back its users! |
