Google’s much discussed political inclination in USA’s power dynamics is getting conspicuous by the day. The drift towards Obama’s party struck gold for the Web giant when Obama was sworn in as the 44th president of United States. With Barack Obama, the be all and end all of global power positions, on their side, executives at Google might just find it easier to dodge inhibitions and bag crucial opportunities for their future endeavours.
Google supported Obama’s election campaign with enormous funding and power backing and now it is Obama’s turn to return the favour. Eric Schmidt, Chief executive at Google and one of the members of Obama’s transition team, along with his mates at Google Inc. can easily count on the White House. It can soon be seen calling shots in the global Web arena with the assistance of one of the biggest power consortiums of the world.
One of the two future plans of Google Inc is the expansion of high speed internet services. It has also stressed on the concept of neutral network with the ban on extra charges on websites with faster portals. All this can only be possible with favourable political will and ample backing by government in power. Now that the tech savvy Obama is in power with the Democrats in Congress, Google’s agendas of democracy for the netizens are likely to be given more thought and consideration.
With power comes responsibility- Google, which has already surmounted the power threshold, will have to keep a rational approach with responsible attitude towards its functioning as a Web firm. Not always has the functioning of the company been unquestioned. Recent infringement lawsuits have charred the working model of the firm and any favours from the White House will only elevate the level of doubt in global Web community towards Google.
Where the doubts still linger, officials at Google claim that their inclination towards the Democrats has always been based on potent zeal towards making the internet market bigger and better. They claim that the support from the government will prove effective in putting their future plans in perspective and no irregularities can ever be found in Google’s relation with the party in power.
Obama’s to-do-list has a top priority for technological enhancements in internet services. He has already talked about expanding broadband access and spreading the network over a wider geography. Google can play on this tech-savvy attitude of the newly elected president to boost its agendas of democratising and improving the properties of internet. |
