India has decided to step up its cyber security following the recent hacking attempts on several websites throughout the country.
According to a report in the Times of India, the move also follows the recent proof of countries launching cyber attacks for intelligence gathering and as an act of war.
The report added that the National Security Council (NSC) headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would soon approve the comprehensive plan and task the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) and National Technical Research Organization (NTRO) to carry out offensive cyber operations, if and when required. Other intelligence agencies would be authorized to only carry out intelligence gathering abroad and not carry out any offensive operations.
The detailed policy for national cyber infrastructure protection currently awaits the NSC’s nod. The policy will help identify all government agencies that would be involved in the protection of the Indian cyber infrastructure and define their roles.
CERT-IN (Computer Emergency Response Team India) would be responsible for protection of most of the cyber space, while NTRO would be tasked to protect the critical infrastructure like important government networks.
The policy also suggests that the defense forces would be protecting their own networks. NTRO and the Intelligence Bureau (IB) would take up the responsibility for providing security to various government networks.
