The government has cancelled the operating permissions of 20 private FM channels for not being operational for long time and not starting operations with in the prescribed time. Some other reasons apart from this have been cited for the backpedalling of channels.
Under the Grant of Permission Agreement, the channels are expected to commence operations within one year of such agreement. But these channels failed to do so. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting recently had sought details regarding operational status from several channels and Radio stations.
However, the fault in Common Transmission Infrastructure has been cited as the reason for not starting the channels on time. The government granted 266 channels the permission to start operations. However, no new FM channel has been launched in the country over the past 18 months. There are 245 private FM channels presently operational in the country.
Century Communications' 9 channels, Infravet's 8, Singla Properties' 1 and Kushal Global's 2 channels have been revoked. |
