BBC is all set to take initiatives to support government's Digital Radio Action Plan. This has been revealed by Tim Davie (Director of Audio and Music, BBC) during Intellect Consumer Electronic Conference’s speaking session.
BBC holds plan of adding 61 national DAB transmitters by next year to enhance their in-home coverage to 92% of UK's population. Also, with this the in-car coverage will register a hike up to 93%. It will include four new transmitters to achieve FM-equivalent coverage level of around 99 per cent population and road coverage within the M25 from around 89 per cent.
The steps will enable DAB to compete the coverage of FM stereo by filling in major gaps in motorway coverage. In this way, re launching of Radio 7 as Radio 4 Extra is proposed by the company to be set as an example of blending of analogue networks and new editorial ideas.
Davie said, "These announcements mean that more licence fee payers will have access to the full range of BBC services and enjoy the benefits of digital radio."
BBC also has plans of launching a single online Radioplayer console to offer all the radio channels on a single place. BBC will offer its research & development expertise to work with the sector to tackle the biggest technical issues facing the industry, such as aftermarket in-car DAB radios. |
