The Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) Consortium is at the 2010 NAB Show and is highlighting a few of its solutions for the radio broadcasting industry to go digital.
Among the solutions at NAB 2010, DRM Consortium provided an early preview of Diveemo, the small-scale video service enabling distance learning applications for DRM. At the Nautel booth, Fraunhofer and RFmondial broadcasted a Diveemo service as part of a DRM+ live transmission chain.
Other highlight by DRM is the Journaline, DRM’s enhanced text information service, which was shown as an integrated feature of DRM capable receiver solutions at the Fraunhofer IIS booth. This includes a DRM30 and DRM+ capable Analog Devices receiver chipset as part of a prototype reference platform, as well as the now available Uniwave DRM receiver.
Besides the solutions, DRM was also discussed during various conference sessions at the 2010 NAB Show. On April 11 a morning session was entirely devoted to Digital Radio at which Christian Horlle, Project Manager for digital radio at Berlin-based Transradio presented a paper on ‘Digital Power Enhancement for DRM’.
Also, a DRM session was organised at the Continental Electronics (CEC) boot where Ruxandra Obreja, Chair of the DRM Consortium and Head of Digital Radio, BBC World Service, re-iterated that “with 600 hours of DRM broadcasts already on air, DRM is set to revitalise radio markets across the globe”. During the session it was mentioned that DRM is more energy efficient, and allows simulcast thus preserves AM transmission during the transition period.
DRM Consortium also announced extending the DRM standard up to 174MHz with DRM+ which has been designed to cover spectrum above 30MHz. A live demo of DRM+ system has been available at the Nautel booth throughout the NAB conference. |
