National Institute for Visually Handicapped, Dehradun has been approved the permission to start, operate and maintain a Community Radio station by the I&B Ministry. A grant of Permission Agreement has been signed by the Ministry regarding this along with sending a Letter of Intent to the Institution. As per the agreement the community station will start its operations in three months.
The new step has been taken after the recommendations of an Inter Ministerial Committee that sought requisite clearances from various ministries.
Setting up of this Community Radio has taken the toll of CR stations to 66 in India. A deep concern over the less numbers of these grass root level radio stations was expressed by various experts during the Radio Asia Conference 2010 which commenced from 22nd to 24th Feb 2010 at The Lalit Hotel, Barakhambha, New Delhi. In the conference various experts from Radio Industry put forward their grief over insensible attitude of government towards Community Radio stations in the country. Few days ago, Kumaun also got its Community Radio Station.
The Ministry encourages setting up of Community Radio Station as it promises to provide an opportunity to the local communities to express themselves, share their views and particularly empower women, youth and the marginalized groups to take part in local self governance and overall socio economic and cultural development in the area.
The Community Radio Station will be established with the objectives to disseminate information on education, training, employment and other facilities available for blind persons, their families and community institutions and will serve as a platform to showcase talent of blind persons. It will be used as a training studio for blind students of mass communication and Broadcasting. The Community Radio will provide an opportunity for empowerment of women, to conduct, sponsor, co-ordinate or subsidize research into all aspects of education and rehabilitation of the visually handicapped and to promote the integration of visually handicapped children in schools and adults in the society. |
