Grant of permission has been duly received by “The Energy Resources Institute” from the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (I&B) to begin with a new community radio station in the state of Uttaranchal.

To be based in the district of Mukteshwar in Uttaranchal, this new community radio station has been named “Kumoun Vani”. As an essential source of information for the people residing in the region, the community radio will be airing content customised according to the local issues as well as technical knowledge about operating a radio station.

Kumoun Vani will bring the local communities on a common platform and enable better communication and flow of resources between them. The programming of the station will comprise of information sharing from the local organisations. Radio spots, radio programmes, music bands, jingles, workshops, seminar sessions, discussions based on different backgrounds, etc will also be fulfilling the needs of the content for the station.

I&B has been looking upon the community radio stations as a significant source of medium to fill the information gap in society. The Ministry looks upon them as a platform for the local communities to express themselves, share their views and particularly empower the women, youth and the marginalized groups to take part in local self governance and overall socio, economic and cultural development in the area. At a recent event, I&B Minister Ambika Soni revealed that they look to have around 4000 community radio stations operating in India in the next three years.

Kumoun Vani is expected to be operational within three months as per the agreement. With this, the number of CRS will increase to 64 in the country.
