Changes are an integral part of the organisational environment, be it due to the technology, regulatory environment, market changes or internal restructuring. But the point is how we deal with it makes the difference. A panel discussion focused on the change management in the radio industry at the final day of the RadioAsia 2010 conference.
Starting with his experience, Parni Hadi (President, RRI, Indonesia) mentioned that the biggest challenge for an organisation manager is to change the mindset of the personnel to be productive and innovative. At the same time its essential to bring change in the perspective of the regulatory government.
Talking about his experience over the change management, Hugh Chiverton (Head of Radio3, RTHK, Hong Kong) said that as a radio broadcaster the organisation is working over to changes to be implemented on the content offered, technical changes with the emergence of new technologies along with the changes in the personnel and the infrastructure. During all these changes the best practice is to carry a positive attitude towards the changes.
“I will use just three words to define change: clarity leadership and example,” were the opening words from Jan Hoek (Director General, Radio Netherlands Worldwide). He explained that to manage the changes it is necessary to stay relevant and trying a different approach. The goals are to be set, explain them and take decisions to move ahead is the way his organisation deals with the changes.
Putting his point forward, Graham Lucas from Germany said, “We need to understand that journalists are not factory workers and even they want to be part of the journey through the changes.” He brought forward the thought that the changes happening also depend on the size of the organisation, type of personnel, type of media involved and most importantly how you handle it.
Simon Spanswick (Founder Director, Association for International Broadcasting) highlighted that humans are a race that are most unacceptable to the changes. Besides, change is phenomenal. The best way to manage the change is by development of efficient strategies at the same time never to underestimate your power to change for better.
The session was concluded by David Astley (Acting Secretary-General, ABU) by a quote, “Its not the strongest of the species that survive but it is the one who is most unacceptable to changes.” Thus change needs to be managed efficiently. |
