Associated Press opens first western news bureau in North Korea

The Associated Press (AP) has opened up a news bureau in Pyongyang, the capital city of North Korea.

The Associated Press is the first western news organization to open up a bureau in North Korea. Until now only other agencies like China's Xinhua had its presence in the country.

Tom Curley, President, Associated Press, said that the bureau would operate under the same standards as its other outlets across the globe.

The bureau will have two permanent North Korean reporters and will be supervised by two Seoul-based US journalists who would make regular visits.

AP also has a video bureau in Pyongyang which it had opened earlier in 2006.
