In context with the recent campaign of senior journalist late Mr. Prabhash Joshi against illicit practices of publishing confusing and promotional matter of electoral candidates by major media houses and newspapers, Editor’s Guild of India has asked the Election Commission of India to act strongly against both the candidates and mediapersons. Guild has stated these acts as violation of the norms of election ethics and also misuse of expenditure in order to gain publicity.
Under the leadership of President Rajdeep Sardesai, a delegation from the Guild, deposited a memorandum to the Commission, explaining ‘Paid News’ phenomenon as defamatory for the ethics and principals for the sacred profession of journalism. In this memorandum several cases covered under investigative reports were included, that highlighted the vulnerability of news items if dealt wrongly. The reports indicated that rich candidates who can mould news angels in their favour always have a clear advantage over others.
The Guild was represented by senior journalists Coomi Kapoor, Mannini Chatterjee and Seema Chisti. Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla assured about taking actions against some random examples indicated in the reports, as it is not possible to monitor all 543 constituencies of the country. |
