Stop Press: Not really, says Print Media

After the ups & downs of the last year things will now be under control for Indian print media. Since last couple of weeks Indian print media witnessed an acceleration momentum.
Inspite of the meltdown the industry made announcements for new launches.
- RPG Publications, the print media venture of the RPG Group has announced the launch of ‘Open’ a feature and current affairs weekly magazine, by the end of March. The stand price of 'Open' magazine will be Rs 40.
- Muscle & Fitness, a US monthly magazine on body building and fitness, from American Media Inc, is going to be launch in a couple of months. Arnold Schwarzenneger, the Hollywood hunk, had worked with the magazine as its Editor-in-Chief for 7 years. Bollywood Macho men Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan are on the advisory board of the magazine in India.
- New York-based magazine for chief executives of fast-growing private companies, Inc., will soon be launched in India. The company is still awaiting the government's approval to publish the magazine in India. The Indian version, called as Inc. India, is being brought to India by Pramath Raj Sinha promoted media company, 9.9 Mediaworx. Inc. India will hit the news stands by June 09.
- Dainik Bhaskar launched a weekly lifestyle supplement, called Weekend Bhaskar, in the Chandigarh market. Weekend Bhaskar is a six page colour supplement distributed free along with the Saturday and Sunday editions of Dainik Bhaskar in the Chandigarh area.
- Aaj Samaj, which is owned by Good Morning Media India that also run a Hindi news channel called ‘India News’, recently launched its fourth edition in Gurgaon (Haryana). Aaj Samaj, which is owned by Good Morning Media India, already has editions in Delhi, Faridabad and Rohtak. The group is in expansion spree it will launch four new editions in the next two months – two in Haryana (Ambala and Karnal) and other two editions will have printing centres in Chandigarh and Shimla .
These launches come in the background of a rapid growth in first half of 2008 with the launch of more than 25 titles of magazines, and all leading newspaper publication were seen in expansion mood.
In the first half of 2008 due to increased rate of the newsprint cost forced the publications were forced to hike ad rates: all major players like BCCL, HT, Mid-day, DNA, Deccan Chronicle, Outlook and India Today Group, among other publications, increased the ad rates.
The second half of 2008 saw the print industry feel the pinch of the slowdown. Lay offs, closure of offices or editions and holding back of new plans are became common. |
