During the past few days the Indian pubcaster, Prasar Bharati, was an important criteria for the Parliament, besides the presentation of Women Bill.

Informing the Rajya Sabha, in a written reply, Jatua on March 8, 2010, notified that the Government has constituted the Group of Minister (GoM) for Prasar Bharati. This GoM would be reviewing the recommendations made by the Naryanmurthy Commission for the efficient operations of the pubcaster in India.

The GoM has been constituted after a detailed evaluation of the recommendations made in the report. GoM would be required to work over to analyse critical issues that are hindering the efficiency of Prasar Bharati and suggest requisite measures. The Government would, thus, be working only after the GoM presents with its report.

Concerns raised over slumping women employees in Prasar Bharati

Separately, a report was tabled at the Lok Sabha by the Committee on Empowerment of Women on March 9, 2010. Titled as “Working Conditions of Women in Prasar Bharati”, the report raised concern over slumping number of women employees in lower categories with the pubcaster.

The Committee sees a direct connection of women in media organisations and empowerment of the fairer sex in the nation. Thus, the Parliament has asked the Prasar Bharati to create more employment opportunities for women with adoption of appropriate measures.

For this the Ministry has informed that it is forming necessary legislations to sort out the issue.
