BBC to cut operations, closure of BBC 6 Music and Asian network on cards

A leading global media network and the pubcaster in the UK region, British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), in order to maintain its quality of services has decided to cut down on its widespread operations.

In a report at the BBC’s website Director General for BBC, Mark Thompson has confirmed that the Company would be soon closing digital radio stations BBC 6 Music and Asian Network as part of a shake-up of the corporation by end of 2011.

This confirmation comes after a series of reports published in various news media publications last week. Cost-cutting activities have been on BBC’s sleeves for a while now to emphasise more over its quality of content and continue to deliver programming fulfilling its agenda of public service broadcasting.

In this shake-up of the organisation around half of BBC’s websites would close by 2013, along with teen services Switch and Blast. Also, Thompson has proposed an extra 600 million pounds ($893 million) to be diverted into programme-making as a result of the changes, but the union Bectu fears that it would result in around 600 layoffs.

“Mr Thompson pledged that in future, 90% of every licence fee 1 pound will be spent on programming and the corporation would spend 25% less on BBC online,” says the report at BBC website.

The strategy view report has been submitted to the BBC Trust. The Trust has published this proposed strategy for the BBC inviting views from the public and industry on the future direction for the corporation. This strategy review can be found on the corporate website of BBC.

The review says that more money will be ploughed into international news and the BBC must put a higher proportion of the licence fee into quality programmes to make "fewer things better".

With these changes on BBC’s mind, there is a possible loss of magazines such as Top Gear, Radio Times and Gardeners' World. It will also move to a more international focus, deriving at least two-thirds of its revenue from outside the UK by 2015.

"The proposed changes we are announcing today are not a piece of politics. It is also not a blueprint of a small BBC or a BBC that is in retreat from digital," said Thompson in BBC report.
