The world’s largest online encyclopaedia “Wikipedia.org” seems to be losing ground with numerous of volunteers quitting.

According to a report in The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), “unprecedented numbers of the millions of online volunteers who write, edit and police it (Wikipedia.org) are quitting.”

Wikipedia -"the free encyclopaedia that anyone can edit"- was incepted way back in 2001 and has witnessed a growing path. Volunteers from across the globe have free access to this portal to contribute and edit articles on this online encyclopaedia being used by millions around the world as a major source of information. Available in around 250 languages, Wikipedia stands in the 10 most popular websites in world.

But, gradually the number of the volunteer workforce of the website has been declining. Around 49,000 editors for the English-language version quit from the organisation in the first three months of 2009. This has increased almost 10 times from the same period in the previous year, which was 4,900, reports WSJ.

Though new people are joining at the post of the editors but, the concern is more about the quality of the articles published at this online encyclopaedia. There have been many times when Wikipedia has come under scanner for its various controversial articles on the website. It might be difficult for the new entrants to match-up with the quality requirements!
