News Corp unveils education division 'Amplify'

   Print    Email

Rupert Murdoch's News Corp has unveiled its education division called Amplify. Amplify is the result of a partnership between News Corp and AT&T.

Amplify will offer digital learning for students of kindergarten through high school. The unit is part of News Corp's plans to set foot into and get a stronghold in multibillion-dollar public education market.

The unit will be headed by Joel Klein, former New York City schools chancellor. Klein joined the company in November 2010.

The plan of moving ahead with the education business was earlier held up after Klein was put in charge of overseeing the internal investigation into the phone hacking scandal.

News Corp first showed its interest in the education business in 2010 when it acquired a 90 percent stake in Wireless Generation for a sum of US $360 million. Wireless Generation builds education software, assessment tools for teachers and data systems used in measuring children’s performance and customize lessons.
