Suguna Swamy, consulting partner & creative director, Ogilvy Dakshin has translated David Ogilvy's 'Confessions of an Advertising Man' into Tamil.
Suguna says that rise of the "Kolaveri Country" has made English uncool. In a state that's the most urbanized, literacy one of the highest, and home to some global automobile giants, English has been and still is a language that is considered limited to the upper echelons of society.
But she believes that why is it important to use only English as a medium for understanding advertising tactics. If the people don’t know English they can’t be deprived from the principles of advertising taught by David Ogilvy, who also suggested that, if you're trying to persuade people to do something or buy something, it seems to me that you should use their language - the language they use every day, the language in which they think.
She maintained that, there are actually some very talented people in advertising agencies, including O&M, who haven't read David Ogilvy's book, only because they don't read English fluently. So for their convenience and to let them understand the tits-bits of advertising she decided to translate the book in Tamil.
This is the first time that the book, which has been translated in 14 languages worldwide, is being rendered in an Indian language.
Patting Suguna’s back, ad-maker & executive chairman & creative director - South Asia, Ogilvy, who will be translating the same book in Hindi, said that, this has been Suguna's passion, and I'm sure she's made it a relevant work.
