Advertising an integral part of freedom of expression: Ambika Soni

Smt. Ambika Soni, Minister for Information & Broadcasting while inaugurating the Adasia 2011 Conference at New Delhi today remarked "advertising is an integral part of the freedom of expression".
She said that measurement of parameters was critical to the growth of advertising sector but media measurement systems in readership and TV ratings also need to reflect the nation's economic, social and demographic realities. She further stated that the measurement process needs to be constantly assessed and upgraded.
The Minister also stated that the advertising market has grown from under Rs. 10,000 crores to almost Rs. 30,000 crores in the last decade which many countries would envy.
She emphasized on the fact that the country has been witnessing a growth in the Print Media Sector, Broadcast sector and in the number of internet users across the country which highlighted the literacy growth of the citizens. She added that the government recently approved the creation of a National Optical Fiber Network for providing Broadband connectivity to the lowest rung of administration at the village level for greater access to communication facilities at the grass roots level.
The Minister also announced that the Ministry was in the process of making some changes in the Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity (DAVP) so that it can match up to the private sectors' capabilities.
Describing advertising as an integral part of the freedom of expression, she said it was impossible in a democracy to separate the freedom of advertising from the freedom of publishing or broadcasting news, opinions or entertainment but added that advertising should be used with sensitivity and responsibility for the good of the consumers.
AdAsia 2011 is being held in India, at The Taj Palace Hotel in New Delhi, after a gap of eight years. The Agenda of the Convention has been prepared on the theme: 'Uncertainty: The New Certainty'. Over 1200 delegates, Indian as well as International, are expected to be part of this three-day long advertising extravaganza. |
