Dr. S. Jagathrakshakan, Minister of State, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, (MIB) addressing the gathering at the inauguration ceremony of BES Expo 2012 laid special emphasis on the Digitization of the cable industry and offering convergence of communication mediums for the future for the broadcast industry.

He observed that the growth of the broadcasting sector is helping the growth of other sectors of the economy as well. “Digitalization promises to ensure attainment of the full potential of the broadcast sector,” he said.

Focusing on the milestones to be achieved through the digitalization process the Minister mentioned that MIB is setting up timelines to increase the confidence of all the stakeholders to channelize investments into up-gradation of cable networks, generating more revenue through value added services.

Addressing the tax sops of the industry overall Dr. S. Jagathrakshakan mentioned that the Ministry is formulating the proposal on reduction of taxes for digital head-zends, set top boxes and income tax holiday. “Hopefully, the sheer size of the Indian market will provide the economies of scale to bring down the cost of digitalization and make Set top boxes affordable,” remarked him.

“I am confident that these initiatives will take the media & entertainment sector to a new growth path,” he concluded.
