Cricket Australia (CA) has taken down Hindi advertisements which were shown during the series with India. The step was taken following confusion on whether the ads promoted tobacco.
The Indian government assured CA that that the boundary-line signage, which was targeted for the TV audience in India, was advertising a brand of mouthwash.
However, CA removed the ads as they were similar to a brand of chewing tobacco.
A Cricket Australia spokesman said that though the Indian government assured them about the ads there was no absolute certainty about the entire detail. The decision to remove the ad was taken after it appeared that the brand advertised also shares a same or similar name with a tobacco company.
Health Minister, Tanya Plibersek, had earlier warned CA that it could be fined up to Aus $66,000 for each breach of the 1992 tobacco advertising ban.
