Al Jazeera has been honoured with the Freedom of Speech and Expression Medal by the Roosevelt Foundation. The Qatar based broadcaster received the award for its efforts to provide independent, impartial news for an international audience.
Al Jazeera has announced that it is dedicating the award to fallen journalists, including the company's cameraman, Ali Hassan Al-Jaber, who was shot dead while filming the Libyan uprising in March 2011.
Ahmed bin Jassim Al-Thani, Director General, Al Jazeera said that the company was truly honoured and humbled to receive the Freedom of Speech and Expression Award. He added that the award is a testament to the dedication of all its employees, who have worked tirelessly, often risking their lives to bring under-reported stories from across the world to light.
Al-Thani also paid tribute to Ali Hassan Al-Jaber, and Tareq Ayoub and Rasheed Wali, who lost their lives in 2003 while reporting for Al Jazeera from Iraq during the war.
The award ceremony will be in Nieuwe Kerk in Middelburg, Netherlands in the presence of Queen Beatrix on 12 May, 2012.
