Al Jazeera Sports, the popular Arabic-language sports channel by the well-known Al Jazeera network, will broadcast the upcoming World Cup in South Africa in 3D format in collaboration with FIFA. FIFA World Cup (South Africa 2010) is scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 11, 2010.
Al Jazeera Sports is currently in the process of creating two 3G (3Gbps) studios that will be designed to facilitate better transmission of HD 1080p and 3D signals. As for the subscribers, they will have to shell out an extra charge on their existing subscriptions to view the channels in 3D, according to Khalifi Bin Nasser Al Ghanim, director general of Al Jazeera Sport. Furthermore, the 2010 World Cup will also be aired by Al Jazeera Sports in High-Definition (HD) format via satellite.
Al Jazeera Sports is one of the most profitable verticals of the international Al Jazeera Network and recently made several technical and business investments. Launched in November 2003, it has quickly grown and become the most popular sports channel in the Middle East, and has covered a wide range of major sporting events, such as the UEFA European Football Championship, Summer Olympics and the Winter Olympics.
The Sports network recently purchased the rights to several premium sports broadcasts from ART. It is also in the process of building a brand new studio facility in addition to a 3G facility.
The first of the 3G studios is scheduled to be completed by mid February while the second is scheduled for completion at the end of March. |
