Winter Olympics 2010: A brief of what has gone into the coverage

The Canadian nation is elated to host the XXI Olympics Winter Games, which is about to begin in a few hours from now. The games will be held from Feb. 12-28 in Vancouver. Let’s have a peak into how the coverage of the games has been planned.

NBC Universal has the exclusive rights to broadcast the Winter Games 2010. NBC will be providing coverage of more than 400 hours of live events from the Winter Games. More than 1,000 hours of coverage will be made available for on-demand access also.

Taking a technological leap, this will be the first ever Olympic Games to be broadcast in the High-definition (HD) format. Omneon’s MediaGrid active storage system located at the NBC Highlights Factory at the Olympics site has been integrated with the EVS XT[2] production server to provide quick access to a large amount of HD content.

Sennheiser Canada has announced that it will be offering RF coordination assistance in conjunction with the upcoming XXI Olympic Winter Games to be held in Vancouver, Canada. The service is being provided as part of the company’s sales and service Winter Games support operation.

NBCU will use more than 100 cameras, all equipped with Canon lenses, to supplement OBS’ coverage. They include Sony HDC-1400, -1500 and -3300 units, and for ENG applications, Sony’s new PDW-F800 XDCAM HD optical-disc camcorders.

In addition to this Panasonic Corporation is providing a full lineup of High-Definition (HD) equipment to support the broadcast of the Olympic Games; delivering the largest supply of AV equipment for any Winter Games in the company's history.

Furthermore to moving to all-HD coverage for the first time, Olympic Broadcasting Service (OBS), the host broadcaster, will also be providing an Olympic News Channel, a 24/7 headline news and information service; and an Olympic Data Feed, a metadata information service to aid broadcasters in customizing content.

NBC is also partnering with Cicso to provide a “media-aware” IP video network infrastructure during the network’s all HD broadcast. The combined solution, which consists of or a private network, Cisco IP video infrastructure and medianet “media aware” technology (Cisco’s brand name for its technology to optimize video over IP), will enable real-time editing NBC content in multiple international and domestic locations and will allow GB-sized files to be transmitted between locations and then delivered to video screens.

More to these, there are preparations that go behind the scenes; the technological development, the camera setup, editing, production, transmission; before the final outcome is viewed by the audience. It’s big for the broadcasters who are there at Winter Olympics 2010 to make history to bring the first Games in HD!
