STB's to require BIS certification

   Print    Email

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification will now be required for the operation of Set Top Boxes (STB's) in India with effect from 3rd April 2013.

In an order issued by the Department of Electronics & IT (DEITY) notified on 3rd October 2012, that all specified electronic goods including STBs imported or domestically manufactured must bear a self Declaration and a registration from BIS.

The notification further mentions that the lack of BIS certification in the STB’s would amount to legal action.

This covers video games, LCD and LED Plasma television sets, visual display units, laptops, optical disc players, amplifiers, and electronic music systems among other things.

It is worth pointing out that the STBs need to only CONFORM to BIS specifications. The Do NOT need BIS Certification, which is a lengthly and expensive process, that will take 6 months or more of testing, and each STB model needs to be certified separately. As an example, NO COLOUR TV model currently is BIS Certified, even though most of them will Conform to BIS Specifications. CONFORMATION is simply a statement that the product ( eg STB) has been manufactured to meet BIS specifications.
