TDSAT imposes fine on channel distributors for illegal distribution

The Telecom Disputes Settlement & Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 each on TV channel distributors Star Den, MSM Discovery and Zee Turner for for allowing their signals to be distributed illegally in Himachal Pradesh by multi system operator (MSO) Fastway.

The broadcast tribunal also referred the three distributors to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for considering how Fastway, which is said to be dominating the field of broadcasting and cable services in Punjab, had been permitted with the connivance of the broadcasters to sneak in the State of Himachal.

The three distributors will have to pay the fine imposed to the rival MSOs - Solan Sat TV, Bridge View Broadband Network and Solan Communication, who had brought the case before the broadcast tribunal.

The tribunal also added that it will send its findings to the Post Masters of Shimla and Solan, who have the authority to license cable operators for taking "appropriate action" against Fastway Transmissions.
