The decision on postponement of the digitization deadline will be announced this week. The Information and Broadcasting Ministry made the statement after a meeting which heard views cable and multi system operators (MSOs) seeking an extension to the 30 June deadline, as well as from the broadcasters who advocate no delay .

While some cable operators and state governments are seeking a six month extension, other MSOs would reportedly be content with the deadline for the first phase of digitisation to be moved to September 2012. Varma said Mumbai was better placed than the other metros to launch digitisation. He said the Government now had a clearer position of the readiness of various stakeholders.

Few cable operators have also filed petitions demanding extension of the deadline, which will be heard by the Bombay High Court on 18th June. The Delhi High Court will hear the case on 20th June and the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) will sit on 25 June to deliberate the current time frame.
