The Digital Entertainment Group (DEG) is on the track to ensure environment sustainability and green packaging. DEG in a recently held Webinar on sustainability in the home video supply chain highlighted an 11% reduced carbon footprint between 2006 and mid-2008 for all studios, saving 130,000 tons of CO2.
Last year Wal-Mart made it a mandatory duty for all the studios to cut down environmental impact by 5% till 2013. In result DEG has managed to slim the DVD carbon footprint, which contains all emissions from disc creation to retail distribution, by incorporating various taskforces.
The task forces established a carbon footprint baseline, set measurement boundaries, and employed measures such as switching to lighter DVD and Blu-ray Disc packaging. The DVD’s footprint has been reduced by 11% to 0.98 lbs of carbon emissions per unit in 2008. Studios are employing lighter wrap paper, as well as using recycled materials made up of 30% post-consumer waste. Companies also are now recycling chemical DVD by products, such as handing over acetone used in disc manufacturing to the furniture industry for finishing their products.
The DEG group includes the most dominant studios such as Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, Warner Home Video, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Microsoft and many others. The DEG group has currently got 30-40 companies that are part of this green movement. They are further looking for feasible options that will help to reduce the adverse impact on environment.
Such effort is always welcomed across the globe as they eventually benefits and restores the natural floral & fauna. Though, most of the damaged has already been done yet it is a good sign to see companies understanding their social responsibility and these corporate endeavours will serve the larger purpose of human existence and life! |
