A Swiss supermarket chain aims to reduce the number of old CDs and DVDs landing in the regular trash by recycling them into motorcycle helmets.
The supermarket chain, Migros, said it has set up collection points where the silver discs can be discarded in Winterthur and Wetzikon, both in the Zurich canton, and in Frauenfeld in the Thurgau canton.
The discs contain polycarbonate, considered a valuable petroleum product. Too many such discs end up in the normal trash.
Migros is teaming up with an association called reDisk to run the programme, which foresees shredding the disks and using the resulting granular remains to make new products such as motorcycle helmets. This means an old Pink Floyd CD or Clint Eastwood movie could be made into head gear. The programme will last through December 31.
At a time should riders plug in their MP3 player during those long rides is a hotly debated topic among motorcycle enthusiasts, Migros is literally bringing music into a bikers attire. |
