Mukerjea joined Star in 1993 as Sales Director (India) in Hong Kong and was re-stationed in India shortly thereafter to establish the company's advertising sales division in the country. He was given additional responsibility for the Middle East market in 1996 and was promoted to Executive Vice President in 1997 and Chief Executive Officer of Star India in 1999 till 2006.
